King Tiger 1:16 – # 64 6

Shifting Colours.

I’ve lost count of how many , but I’ve applied a number of filters and ”fading-filters” with the purpose of shifting the colours towards something I’m satisfied with, and to give more vibrance and life to the surfaces. The yellow is now more brown-yellow, the red and green is considerably darker. Pinwashes are starting to bring forward the details.

All wooden parts of the pioneer tools have been painted. The gun has been mounted permanently: take note if you opt to use the spring construction for elevating the gun! The spring is too long, and I recommend you cut about 3 coils from it to get a nicer elevation angle. What’s more, you cannot depress the gun with the help of the spring as Trumpeter intended. The spring is way to stiff, and you will only break the mount, and possibly more inside the turret if you try!

The wire cutter handles have been painted a rather light redbrown colour (these were made of stiff paper on the original), the handle ends, made of Bakelite should be glossy black.

    Hello Hasse,

May I say that your King Tiger is absolutely awesome to look at…
What a great build you are doing. And the couloring, very good.
Really admire your build. Began my build a couple of days ago, and find this exellent building log.
Keep up the good work, and I will check this website very often.

    Greetings Marc.

    Hi Marc,
Thank you, thank you, for you kind words! I hope my blogging is of some help to you when building the monster! Will you make an out-of-the-box build or superdetail/photoetch it?
Haha, just noticed now (took me a while…): I’ve mounted the rear towing shackles totally wrong… thought it looked kinda funny with them in the top rear holes 🙂
    /Hans

    Hi Hasse,

It will be an out of the box build.
I find it impressive enough when finished in time….
As I can see the superdetail can also done by handpainting/airbrush.
Have finished my Leopold Railway Gun.1/35.
    In panzergrau and rusty weathered.
    Really nice model from Trumpeter.
For the moment I choose the King Tiger to build first. Another great project is still in the large box. The Dora Railway Gun.
So If I have questions about the KT, can I get any advice from you?
BTW, How long is your build time for so far?

    Until next time,
    Marc.

    Marc,
Absloutely, you can do a whole lot for the overall impression with some careful painting!
Oh, jeez, you have the Dora? That one seems too big even for me, you will need a BIG workbench for tht one!
If you have any particular questions about the KT you’re welcome to ask, of course.
Roughly speaking, I think I’ve put about 190 hours into the KT project, effective work time. somthing like 20-40 hours more and I shold be done with it.
    /Hasse
