King Tiger 1:16 – # 61 11

Nya tacklingar med tornet.

Ok, nu är det slutfiddlat. Kanonen har monterats permanent, likaså den koaxiala kulsprutan. Resten av målningen och vädringen görs med grejjerna på plats.

Tackling the Turret Again.

Ok, time to stop  fiddling with loose parts. The main gun’s been permanently mounted, as has the coaxial MG. The final painting, blending and weathering will be done with everything in place.

The decals from Peddinghaus included some very nice decals for the fire extinguishers, quite a boost to the look of them. The extingusher on the engine deck have only received a basic rough blocking in so far. All hatches have been repainted Dunkelgelb. Contrasts nicely to the white interior.

Toningen av tornet har påbörjats. Jämför med det helt ovädrade chassit. Toningen tar tid, jag höll på med tornet i ca 3 timmar, och jag är långt ifrån klar…

I’ve started fading and toning the turret. Compare with the unprocessed chassis. The fading is quite time consuming, I worked on the turret for about 3 hours, and I’m far from finished…

looks great Hans— I have a post over at the AFV link that mentions you–I hope you don’t mind-the turret fading is looking great—william

Suveränt Hans! Gillar bilden med den ofixade vagnskroppen och det tillpiffade tornet. Man ser verkligen skillnaden nu och det ser inte så leksaksmässigt ut. Think we´ve got a winner!

    Hi William,
Of course not, very thankful for your posting! Any link to the post?

    Stellan,
Tack, snälla du! Det finns hopp om bygget än 😀

fantastic work, i was curious with the peddinghaus decals did you pick up a separate sheet for the fire extinguishers or are those included in the specific tank markings? forgive me, i have seen their very impressive assortment and website but am unable to read it.

  • Hasse Inläggsförfattare

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for the feedback!
On all the 1:16 King Tiger decal sheets you get 3 different fire extinguisher decals, and two shell stencilling decals (not much use, I need 72!!).

thank you very much for the reply and info Hans. I know what you mean about the 72 shells, i figure mix in some of the steel casing rounds and all the rest can just be turned enough so we can’t read them 😉

  • Hasse Inläggsförfattare

    Hi Peter,
Yeah, that’s my plan too! The shells at the back towards the firewall wont even benefit from the photoetch punch plates/bottoms… I did sme calculatin, and you only need to give about 20 shells a really careful finish, the rest will be very much hidden.
A bigger headache is the completely wrong ammo racks, to fix them is almost impossible (they should have the wood holders placed so the shells positions are tapered toward the tip… the turret basket will get stuck on the rear racks if traversed…).
    /Hans

  • peter

    Hans,
you’re talking about the racks in the hull sponsons correct? the ones adjacent to the turret are angled away from the turret basket?
forgive me as i’ve seen it mentioned but haven’t quite been able to get a visual diagnosis for the problem.
i don’t know if this is a standard in armour modeling but occasionally i see it in large scale aircraft building is a ”tweak list” which goes over all the perceived errors in a kit and what would make it correct, do you know of anything like that for this kit? (aside from watching the great builds going on in front of us)

  • Hasse Inläggsförfattare

    Peter,
Those are the ones, yeah. In reality they should be broader at the back (towards the firewall) and shorter at the front. As is, the plates that connect the turret basket to turret proper, smashes into the front of those holders when turret is traversed around the 23-01 hour positions. It’s a major fault, and one has to wonder: didn’t Trumpeter actually BUILD a prototype before going into production??
More on the ammo racks here:

As for a tweak list, I’ve suggested I could make one: I thought I’d just start an article here, where people could fill in by leaving replies. No one seems very interested though, so I’ve dropped it for now… main problem is the list would be very, very long 🙂
    /Hans

that is too bad about the response towards a tweak list. figured with the builds going on here, afv, missing-linx and finescale, there would be plenty of interest…especially when everyone says they will be watching the build 😉

i’ll have to keep my eye out for anything if it comes about.

i know what you mean about trumpeter and some of their builds…i’ve build a few of their jets and have seen some of the handy work. one of the reasons i was curious about the list, that and there doesn’t seem to be a single definitive king tiger reference that i’ve come across…well thats cheaper than the 1/16 kit anyway

  • Hasse Inläggsförfattare

    Hi again Peter,
Hehe, well you know, a lot of watchers… and the correction list IS getting ridicously long. I’d say if You follow the M-L KT group, You’ll have a good grip on errors, omissions and tweaks.
As for books, I’m totally spoiled (I do after all run an actual physical military bookshop!): I have most available references there are, except the Achtung Panzer title (borrowed it to someone, went AWOL…) and I’d say that the book I’ve referenced again and again definitely is ”Germany´s Tiger Tanks – VK45.02 to Tiger II: Design, Production & Modifications.” by Thomas L. Jentz & Hilary L. Doyle (Schiffer Military History 1997).
The other recommendation I’d like to give is the PanzerBasics 2 disc DVD set of over 2100 very high res pictures:
    http://www.panzerbasics.com/index_files/25-disks/saumur-disk.htm
That one is even a MUST HAVE for anyone building a Tiger I or Tiger II in any scle, just brilliant and well worth the modest asking price!
    /Hans
