Grundmålning av motor.

Ah, vad skönt att bryta av byggandet med lite målning, så man ser att det händer nåt.
Det här brukar vara ett känsligt stadie för mig: går första målningen åt fanders tappar man lätt sugen. Nu gick det bra så det är bara att tuta o köra!
För airbrushingen använde jag följande Vallejo Model Air färger:
– 072 Gun Metal
– 065 Steel
– 062 Aluminium
– 049 Medium Sea Grey
– 048 Dark Sea Grey
– 051 Barley Grey
– 001 White
– 058 Gloss Varnish
– 061 Thinner

Jag sprayade först med Gun Metal på motorblock och toppar, och lade lite highlights med Steel. Tunnare gods och plåtdelar grundade jag i Steel och highlights gjordes med Aluminium. Sen sprayade jag alla delar med ett transparent lager Medium Sea Grey (jag tunnade ut färgen med Vallejo Thinner, som i tillräcklig mängd gör färgen transparent). Inget uniformt lager färg, utan lite slumpmässigt.

Motorblocket och topparna fick ett tunt lager Dark Sea Grey här och där, medan generatorer och andra burkar lättades upp med Barley Grey. Filtren målade jag med Barley Grey uppblandad med vitt. Till sist klarlackade jag allt, som föreberedelse för kommande washes/laveringar.

Base Coating the Engine.

Ah, great to finally do some painting, and actually see some progress. This is a crucial step for me, the first painting session. If something goes wrong heit’s easy to loos focus. This time all went well, nice feeling!
For the airbrushing I used the following Vallejo Model Air colours:
– 072 Gun Metal
– 065 Steel
– 062 Aluminium
– 049 Medium Sea Grey
– 048 Dark Sea Grey
– 051 Barley Grey
– 001 White
– 058 Gloss Varnish
– 061 Thinner

I sprayed the engine block and tops with Gun Metal, some highlights were made with Steel. Thinner parts were base coated with Steel and highlights in Aluminium. All parts were then lightly misted with Medium Sea Grey (Vallejo Thinner works well to make a semitranparent mix). Generator and and other ”cans” were given a coat of Barley Grey. The air filters got a mix of Barley Grey mixed with white. As a last step I gave everything a coating of gloss varnish to protecti from washes.

Inga bevarade motorer av typen Maybach HL230 P30 har fått behålla sin orginalfärg, tyvärr. Man får helt enkelt försöka göra intelliganta gissningar, analysera svartvita foton, och givetvis också använda lite konstnärlig frihet.
Till penselmålning av rör, slangar, boxar, kopplingar osv använde jag följande Vallejo Model Color färger:
– 995 German Grey
– 950 Black Grey
– 886 Green Grey
– 907 Pale Greyblue
– 950 Black
– 985 Hull Red
Dessutom använde jag dessa Vallejo Game Color färger:
– Game Color 028 Dark Green
– Game color 038 Scrofulous Brown
Jag blandade de 4 olika grå färgerna och den svarta helt efter eget huvud, och blockade in olika intressanta smådetaljer. Avgasrören fick ett förberedande rostfärgs-lager, och bränslepumpens kopp målades grön för att simulera glas.

None of the worlds preserved Maybach HL230 P30 engines have their original colours intact. You just have to make assumptions and clever guesses from what is generally known about german traditions and procedures in this field, analyze black and white pictures and also use some artistic freedom.
For brushpainting of plumbing, cables, boxes, couplings and so on I used the following Vallejo Model Color colours:
– 995 German Grey
– 950 Black Grey
– 886 Green Grey
– 907 Pale Greyblue
– 950 Black
– 985 Hull Red
And these Vallejo Game Color colours:
– Game Color 028 Dark Green
– Game color 038 Scrofulous Brown
The 4 different grey hues were mixed quite freely and applied to interesting details. Exhausts were painted in a rusty hue, and the fuel pumps glass jars were painted green.

Jaaa, 12 olika nyanser av grått… syns det? Jodå, det blir mycket mera liv i motorn tycker jag. Det är knepigt att plåta grå objekt, och jag kan säga att den ser mycket intressantare ut i verkligheten!
Här har jag lyft bort luftfiltren och skyddsblecket mot förgasarna. De får vara lösa.

Right, 12 different grey hues… does it show? Well, I think there’s much more ”life” in the engine now. It’s a bit tricky to photograph grey objects, and I’ll have to say the engine look much more interesting ”in real life”.
Here I’ve removed the airfilters and their mounting plate. I’ll leave them unglued.
