Aircraft History and Specification

In 1980, the USAF found some of the C-141 that had major structural problems as a result of heavy use. McDonnell Douglas proposed to develop a new aircraft using more powerful engines and increased size. In 1981, McDonnell Douglas won the contract to build its proposed aircraft, by then designated the C-17A Globemaster III. The C-17 program had many early technical difficulties and management problems. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, McDonnell Douglas was consistently behind schedule and over budget on the program. It maiden flight was on 1991. During flight-tests, the C-17s set 22 world aviation records. The C-17 evaluation program finally completed in 1995. The first C-17 squadron was declared operational by the Air Force in the same year. Two years later McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing.
