F4U-4 Corsair Diorama

Pictures and model by Janne Nilsson

In October 1997 issue of The Magazine, Janne Nilsson presented this very model. The kit was Hasegawa 1/48th scale Vought F4U-4 Corsair, built out-of-the-box. Janne thinks that building the aircraft kit out-of-the-box is perfectly acceptable, but he always tries to present his models in a scratchbuilt way! Janne was planning to add a pilot figure and a base. And now, the promise has been fulfilled. Janne planned to depict a Corsair in it’s right element. That would be island-hopping in the Pacific! Hence the palm trees, sand, a pilot figure and a bit of PSP (Pierced Steel Plank) taxiway.

Well, you may point out, in such case, why did Janne camouflage his F4U-4 in post-war ’Korean’ markings? ”At first I didn’t notice they were post-war.” says Janne ”I just picked the most attractive scheme provided with the kit, and honestly, missed to read the caption. But then again, we needn’t be too serious about our hobby, need we?”. We surely don’t, especially Janne, who completes 15 or so modelling projects of all sorts each year, and all of them of excellent quality like this one.

This little diorama has been featured in September 1998 issue of Allt om Hobby (well-known Swedish magazine for modellers).
