1966 Ford Fairlane 500

by Göran Kindlund

This is a model with which I am personally very pleased, but which somehow fails to capture any attention on model shows. Perhaps it’s simply too anonymous.

I painted the model with automotive lacquer in the original shade of Ermine White.

The basis for this project was the Fairlane 390 GTA kit from AMT. This was converted to a somewhat simplified model 500.

The conversion involved a few external and internal modifications. Externally, the kit comes with chromed mock ”air intakes” on the bonnet. These are appropriate for the 390, but not for 500, so they were shaved off and filled.

The interior received a new front seat.

”Big block” kit engine representative for the 390 had to be replaced with a smaller one. The parts came from AMT’s 1967 Ford Mustang GT. The Mustang kit served also with rear suspension.

The major work was in fact not caused by the conversion, but by the inacuracies of the AMT kit. The roof had wrong proportions being too long. The windscreen and the rear window were too low. These problems have been dealt with in AMT’s later re-issue of the same kit as a ”cousin” Mercury Comet Cyclone GT. In this kit the roof and clear parts were of correct shape, so i replaced Fairlane’s roof with the one from the Cyclone.

Final detailing included usual items like ignition wires, fuel lines, electrical wiring, cooler plumbing etc.

The project was completed by a slight weathering applied to the chassis and engine room, to enhance the impression of an everyday car.
