:
“Russian recycling”, Murmansk 1991
Historical background:
The once mighty Soviet “Northern fleet” was in very bad shape a few years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. This diorama shows a destroyer of the Sovremenny class lying at the bottom in a Murmansk harbor. To the people of West that saw these rusting ships at Murmansk on TV it was not widely known that most of them sank due to “Russian style” recycling. Especially the bottom valves made of brass in most Russian ships where extremely valuable. They were frequently stolen from abandoned ships inevitably sending the ship to the bottom.
Inspiration:
Numerous photographs of rusting ships. Memory of watching russian subs rusting away on tv.
The build:
The wreck is based on the Bronco Sovremenny class Destroyer in 1/200 scale. Figures are from Preiser and the crane is from Kibri (1/220 or Z-scale). The trucks are war gaming pieces from GHQ. Most details including radar/antennas. Telephone poles and the warehouse are scratch built. The industrial railway tracks are T-gauge railway tracks in 1/440 scale.
The base is built in plasticard and extruded polystyrene. Snow is from Noch. Icicles are made with fishing wire and Woodland Scenics Water effects.
Warning: However tempting it may be don´t try if your tongue gets stuck on the frozen metal. (You won´t get stuck but you will ruin my model. )
