Panthers and Zimmerit, a puzzle I have solved!
OK Here we go:
The panthers at Kursk did not have any zimmerit at all. The Panther AusfD would have been free of Zimmerit coating. The order to coat vehicles with Zimmerit took place in September 1943. So vehicles from September 1943 would have had zimmerit.
The last 37 Model D panthers produced in September would have all had Zimmerit. The manufacture of the Ausf.A started in September (Late) so all these would have had Zimmerit. (The reason you get some Panther Ausf.A witht he Ball mounted Machine gun, and some without is simply because some Ausf.D Hulls were still around and these were made to Ausf.A standard, without changing the machine gune Mount!) So All model A Panthers would have had zimmerit, there were none without.
Zimmerit was discontinued in August 1944, (I think) so Panther AusfG upto this point would have been coated in Zimmerit.
After this date the Panthers would not have been coated with zimmerit.
***The next question arises as to would the pattern of zimmerit be different to where it was applied? Ie: was the workshop zimmerit different from the zimmerit applied at the field?
The answer to this question is a bit daft!
There were 3 different companies making the Panthers, MNH, Daimler-Benz and MAN Now each would have had their own methods/patterns of applying zimmerit. Now as the use of zimmerit was intorduced they did suggest that tools and paste be sent to the troops at the front in order to cover vehicles in the field. So depending on what tools the troops got (applicators) would dictate the way the paste was put on (pattern) So there is no definative answer to how the paste was different depending on who and where it was applied. However there are patterns that were used by each Manufacturer and obviously copied in the field. I am not sure on which was unique to whom but I believe that Christian did an excellent article on the Panzernet website!
