Efter att ha irrat runt med bil i staden på jakt efter någonstans att äta lunch åkte vi till Küstenmuseum.

Küstenmuseum är ett litet museum som visar Wilhelmshavens utveckling från medeltida bosättningar till dagens flottbas. Om jag fattade saken rätt, började Wilhelmshaven sin historia som ett sjörövarnäste. Så småningom tröttnade hansestäderna Bremen och Hamburg på detta och gick till effektivt motangrepp.

På muséets övervåning hittade jag det jag sökte efter. -Fartygsmodeller.

Här fanns en modell av Graf Spee…

… och en modell av Scharnhorst i sent utförande.

Dessutom fanns även här en modell av Lutzow, men den var inte lika fin som den som stod på Marinemuseum och dessutom klart svårfotad pga reflexer i glasmontern.

Efter museibesöken var det dags för en kort promenad i staden.

Det är inte bara i forna östtyskland som det finns vackra fabriksruiner att fotografera.

Kaiser Wilhelm Brücke. -Ett vackert minne från den kejserliga tiden.

Någon båttur i hamnen hann vi inte med, vilket var synd. Det hade varit kul att åka runt i den hamn man sett så många bilder från.

För den som är historieintresserad i allmänhet och i synnerhet för den som är intresserad av marinhistoria, är Wilhelmshaven väl värt en dagsutflykt.

English summary

After  some roaming around town in search for a place to have lunch, we ended up in McDonalds in the shopping mall in the city centre. Then we went to the Küstenmuseum. The Küstenmuseum deals with the history of Wilhelmshaven. It seems it started its history as a pirates nest, that the Hansa Cities Bremen and Hamburg later made short work of.

On the upper floor I found what I was looking for. -Ship models. Most interesting was the model of Scharnhorst in her late war configuration.

There was also a model of the Lützow, but it wasn’t as good as the one in the Marinemuseum and also very hard to photograph on account of the reflections in the protective glass.

There was never time to take a boat trip in the harbour, which was too bad. It would have been nice to go around the harbour that I’ve seen so many pictures of.

Instead we took a short walk and found a beautiful industrial ruin (apparently former east germany has no monopoly on them) and the Kaiser Wilhelm bridge, a fine example of Wilhelmine industrial design.

For anyone interested in history in general, and especially for those interested in maritime history, Wilhelmshaven is well worth a day trip.
